Blockberry Update: Obama and CWG provide interim relief

Posted by Shrinidhi Hande

Looks like Bla(o)ckberry users have got some interim relief, as Govt has given some time given the CWG visit and US president Barrack Obama’s India visit in November…

NEW DELHI: It’s politics and not technology that finally swung the BlackBerry issue. American President Barack Obama’s — whose addiction to BlackeBerry is well chronicled — impending visit to India in November with a large delegation of similar enthusiasts; international arrivals on account of the CommonWealth Games and political pressure from the Canadian government appear to have prompted the home ministry to temporarily postpone its plans to blackout select BlackBerry services from August 31.

This contradicts the popular belief that BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) struck a breakthrough with the home ministry and security agencies on the matter of encryption in its critical meeting on Monday. The large anticipated inflow of international visitors over the next few months includes a major US delegation of both government and industry officials accompanying President Obama. Many of these visitors are likely to use the Blackberry Enterprise and Messenger services, the very offerings that are under the domestic security lens.

Number portability from October 31

Posted by Shrinidhi Hande

How many times did you think of switching to some other operator but held back purely because of the inconvenience of having to change the number all over again?

Looks like much expected and anticipated number portability is finally happening. The latest deadline for introducing the facility has been extended to October 31…

“The implementation of MNP has been delayed four times over the past one year as operators are not ready with their networks. The latest deadline for introducing the facility has been extended to October 31. Earlier, MNP was likely to be implemented in a phased manner in the first phase by December 31, 2009, in metro cities and Category ‘A’ Service Areas and in the rest of the country thereafter by March 2010.”

Digital payment solutions will most definitely be popular once there is awareness between the consumers, and if there is a clear understanding between the regulators and the institutions. Such conferences will hopefully help in both the situations, more importantly the latter because unless the regulators and the institutions have a clear cut understanding, it doesn’t make much sense to spread the word to the customers. RangDe: Financial Inclusion through Microcredit

Posted by Shrinidhi Hande

Financial Inclusion has been a hot topic of debate in our last conference at Mumbai. This post is about an organization called RangDe, which is spearheading the initiative of micro credit and thus offering financial assistance to thousands of rural entrepreneurs.
rangde-logo-beta
RangDe identifies villagers who are looking to start their own small businesses- a vegetable shop or a saree business or a kirana shop or a sweets & snacks business and so on and help them with seed funding. These village entrepreneurs will only be needing a reasonably small amounts-from Rs 5000-15000 to start their small business and traditional financial institutions like Banks will not entertain them-either because the amount is too small for any profitable lending business or these people have no collateral to offer.

I happened to meet Rangde founders at an event called Cerebrate and got an opportunity to more about their mission.

Unlike village money lenders who charge upto 30-50% interest rate, Rangde charges just about 8.5% and has a repayment rate of 99%.
During past few years RangDe has made a positive impact to several individuals in Andhra, TN, Kerala, Maharastra, Orissa and many other states. Read this post to know more about my experience with RangDe or refer to Rangde official website
